This post is for a Locum Consultant Medical Microbiologist to the Cwm Taf University Health Board and will be based across 2 sites, at the Royal Glamorgan hospital in Llantrisant and Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established Microbiology team that has a high clinical profile within the Cwm Taf Health Board. It is a 6 month Locum post, and will join the complement of three full time Consultants in Microbiology. A successful candidate with experience and interest in Infection, Prevention & Control may be considered for the role of Infection Control Doctor for the Health Board. They will have Health Board wide commitments including community services. Candidates with any field of interest are encouraged to apply. The work will be shared equitably and the development of a special interest by the appointee would be in line with the clinical interest of the Health Board. Specialist roles may be rotated among the team.

Cwm Taf comprises 2 District General hospitals, Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant which opened in November 1999 and Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil which is undergoing full refurbishment. Supporting these hospitals are 2 new community hospitals one based in the Rhondda Valley and the other in the Cynon valley. There is also a newly opened Health Park in Merthyr Tydfil which comprises 2 GP surgeries and numerous services and clinics.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Health Board/hospital in consultation with consultant colleagues. If the person appointed elects to undertake a maximum part-time contract, they will be required to devote a substantially the whole of their professional time to the duties of the post.

Cwm Taf Health Board was formed in April 2008 and provides NHS services to a catchment area of some 300,000 people. If appointed, you will join a team of 3 full time medical microbiology staff and be expected, together with your colleagues, to provide a comprehensive medical microbiology service comprising clinical, laboratory and infection control.

The Infection Control team, comprises 8 WTE nurses. This team comprises a senior nurse and 7 registered nurses. The team is split equally to provide cover across both sites. The team is led by the Infection Control Doctor who is responsible to the Chief Executive for the implementation of the Infection Prevention and Control Strategy and Implementation Plan. The nursing members of the Infection Control Team are accountable to the Infection Control Doctor and professionally to the Director of Nursing.

The team members are very enthusiastic and undertake a variety of infection prevention and control activities including teaching and training, surveillance, clinical liaison, support and advice. MRSA bacteraemia, C.difficile and a number of post surgical surveillance are mandatory requirements for the Welsh Assembly Government and our rates are currently one of the lowest in Wales.

The successful candidate will be accountable to the Chief Executive through the Medical Director and Clinical Director.
